Extra-curricular balance
In
order to effectively balance extra-curricular activities with our expectations
in the elementary classrooms, there needs to be a precedent set on the
importance of doing well academically.
Easier said than done…right?! Setting up high academic expectations is not
something one person can take on alone.
It takes a community of parents, educators, coaches, and administrators. As a teacher, it is important to support the
students with their extra-curricular activities; however, students also need to
be held accountable when it comes to putting academics first. Since many children go out for sports because
they enjoy the challenge of the game, it is important to challenge them in the
classroom as well.

Veronica, I liked hoe you talked about setting high expectations. I had never really thought about that, but it is so true. We need to let our students know that we expect alot out of them and know they can do well.
ReplyDeleteVeronica, I agree with you that students need to be held accountable to putting academics first. I also agree that teachers need to support students with their extra curricular activities. Very well said.
ReplyDeleteVeronica, I agree that it can not be done from simply one person. It takes a school with strong expectations from EVERYONE to balance extra-curricular activities with academic success.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more! I feel like it takes everyone involved in a child's life to show persistence in keeping schoolwork before extra-curricular activities! With success academically a student will strive just as hard in other activities because our sports-driven society has high expectations.
