Yes, I definitely feel that a reform is needed. The teaching profession requires that teachers
be flexible and knowledgeable when it comes to teaching in the 21st
century. Unfortunately, many of these out-of-date
teachers are not keeping up with the times, and because they are protected by
tenure, they are not making an effort to get to know these new advances
either. When the students are showing
teachers how to run technology equipment, there is a problem. The question that should be asked is how are
students being taught effectively when they are the ones teaching the
teachers?!?
I agree with you that some teachers do not take the time to get to the know the new advances. I also agree that students should not be showing teachers how to run things. You have really good strong points.
ReplyDeleteOur world is constantly changing and our teachers need to change along with it. However, I think it is a struggle for the older teachers because they are protected by tenure and do not feel the need to try. I really like the question you brought up at the end, I think it is something all administrators should think about.
ReplyDeleteI could not agree with this more! Tenure creates comfort and complacency which is not fair at all to our kids. Teachers, if they cannot be challenged on their own accord need to be challenged to keep adapting for their children. If they cannot do this it is absolutely absurd to be protected by tenure. Great opinion.

I feel you are exactly right. It is sometimes hard to think that later on in life I could be that old teacher not knowing the recent technology and be glad I would be saved by tenure. But, reforms are definitely needed to benefit a students learning experience. Teachers at a younger age become more involved and excited to teach their students.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely with you when you say that when students are showing teachers how to use technology that is an issue. If teachers want to continue working in the education field, they need to be able to adjust with the changing times otherwise they are simple hurting the students.
